ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 17, 2016)–Forwardly placed throughout under Brice Blanc, Havanna Belle blew by favored Gaga A a sixteenth of a mile from home and marched to a 2 ¼ length victory in Santa Anita’s $75,000 Astra Stakes on Sunday. Trained by Phil D’Amato, the 4-year-old Irish-bred filly got the marathon distance of a mile and one half on turf in 2:27.03.“I was able to work her last week and I’ve watched videos of her,” said Blanc. “I always thought she looked like maybe she was too far back. When I worked her the other day, she acted like a filly that has a little kick, but not necessarily like a filly that can come from way out of the clouds.“I was able to break from the gate well and she put me right into the race. I was a little worried. She got a little keen the first part but I was able to give her a little breather coming onto the front side and it made all the difference. It was just how I envisioned it in my head.”A troubled eighth in a second condition allowance going one mile on turf here Dec. 30, Havanna Belle was winless in her last four starts. Off at 10-1 in a field of nine older fillies and mares, she paid $22.20, $10.80 and $8.00.“It took her a bit to settle, but I thought that the whole way around Brice had her in the perfect spot tracking,” said D’Amato. “When it was time to make his move he angled her out and got it.”Owned by Michael House, Havanna Belle notched her third win from 14 lifetime starts and with the winner’s share of $47,520, increased her earnings to $111,813.“I’m very happy,” said House in the Winner’s Circle. “This filly has always shown promise but she hasn’t had too many clean trips. Brice put her into the race today and then got her to relax.”Brazilian-bred Energia Fribby, who added blinkers, settled nicely in the early stages and finished well to complete the exacta under Mario Gutierrez. Off at 18-1, she finished a nose in front of fellow longshot Sweet as a Rose and paid $18.60 and $12.80.Ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, Sweet as a Rose rallied from off the pace as well and paid $7.40 to show.Fractions on the race were 23.55, 47.12, 1:12.17, 1:37.28 and 2:02.31.First post time for a nine-race card on Monday is 12:30 p.m. Admission gates open at 10:30 a.m.

Jolted by the massive loss in the fourth ODI, India would aim to get the crucial psychological edge over the West Indies before the Test series when they take on the hosts in the fifth and final one-dayer, here on Thursday. The ODI series is already in their pocket as the Indians have taken a 3-1 lead but they would try and ensure that the score line suggests domination by signing off 4-1.Berths in the eleven for the first Test match, scheduled to start next Monday, are up for grabs and those certain would aim to fall in a groove while those still on the edge would look to leave a definite impression on the team management. There are at least two batsmen and the fast-bowling combination which needs to be sorted out ahead of the Test series.India needs two middle-order batsmen for the first Test. So, there is an added incentive for Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina, almost certainties, to familiarise themselves with the venue. The pitch at Sabina Park is expected to have pace and bounce and it would do a world of good to Kohli and Raina if they are able to spend some profitable time in the middle. Both have had at least one notable innings in the series but their runs and averages so far — 105 for Kohli at 26.25 and 82 for Raina at 27.33 — aren’t very impressive. The only contender for a berth in the middle order, Subramaniam Badrinath, is way too behind in the race having made a mere 40 runs at 13.33 from four games and looking distinctly uncomfortable against short-pitched deliveries of Andre Russell in the fourth game on Monday.advertisementThe biggest beneficiary has been leg-spinner Amit Mishra with nine wickets at 17 apiece from four games. He could revise the trend of going into a Test abroad with just one spinner. The West Indian batsmen have found him more than a handful in one-dayers and he could be an even bigger force in Tests given that he would have an attacking field to support him.Mishra is likely to be retained in the fifth one-dayer even though he went for a few in the fourth game on Monday. The team management would like to have a closer look at him on a pitch which is more suited to a fast bowler.India would almost certainly go with two spinners in the final game and that leaves just two places for medium pacers. On the face of it, Munaf Patel is almost a certainty for the Tests and that leaves Praveen Kumar and Ishant Sharma to battle it out for the second slot.Praveen is yet to play a Test for India so he would not be short of motivation.West Indies would be encouraged by their consolation win in the fourth game. A couple of young men, Andre Russell and Anthony Martin, have shown the way forward with their spirit and belief but with Chris Gayle once again ignored, batting looks brittle. But the good news is that fit-again opener Adrian Barath made his way in, replacing a not-too-impressive Kirk Edwards in the squad which beat India by 103 runs in the fourth one-dayer.Besides Barath, Ravi Rampaul also returned to the side after a brief rest to replace Danza Hyatt. The 21-year-old Barath was undergoing rehabilitation after suffering a hamstring injury which forced him out of the 2011 World Cup.West Indies also finally have their wish for a hard and bouncy pitch answered in Sabina Park. They would love to carry the momentum forward into the game and in the Test series beyond.Opener Lendl Simmons has been a positive influence and Kieron Pollard is showing signs of asserting himself in the middle. The lower order has definitely shown signs of resurgence. If only the top order can look to tackle spinners, build stands and not give up then this West Indian side could still run the world champions close.- With inputs from PTISquads:India: Suresh Raina (capt), R Ashwin, S Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh (vc), Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra, Munaf Patel, Parthiv Patel (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Manoj Tiwary, Shikhar Dhawan.West Indies: Darren Sammy (capt), Carlton Baugh (wk), Devendra Bishoo, Darren Bravo, Adrian Barath, Ravi Rampaul, Anthony Martin, Kieron Pollard, Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons.
Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppThe Dominican Community gathered at a site which is usually for their joyous festivities, today though the mood was somber as those from the DR living in the Turks and Caicos aimed to organize to assist police in their search for 26 year old Sorineida Arias. Magnetic Media was on the scene near the down town ball park, where Dominicans were visibly upset and understandably concerned as this is the second case of a missing woman from their community for the year.“I hope the evidence now comes for true. The only thing I need is justice, for every Dominican they kill up here for nothing, like maybe some people believe the Dominican is dog or whatever, that’s not true. Plenty Dominican come up here to work hard.” – member of DR Community“We are now planning how we’re going to conduct the search, where we are gonna go, and how we’re going to do it, that’s what we’re gonna do now. That search will be based on assumptions that we may have, that we are trying to put together to see how it will go.” – Edwin HernandezSorineida Arias went missing on Sunday July 10 and was last seen around 4 a.m at her home in Five Cays. The first young woman was found in bushes in North West Point Provo; also 26, it was Uneira Veras who was found dead on April 23rd at Pirate’s Cove; her murder remains unsolved.
