Scholarship Recipients Tour Correctional Facility Begin Studies

first_img Two African-Nova Scotian students toured the correctionalfacility they hope to work in someday, as they begin collegestudies as the first recipients of the Morton Simmondsscholarship. Algeron Smith, 22, of North Preston, and Larissa Downey, 19, ofCherry Brook/Lake Loon, are first-year students in the HumanServices (Correctional Services) diploma program at the Trurocampus of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC). Followinggraduation, both are guaranteed employment contracts withcorrectional services in the Nova Scotia Department of Justice. “I want to be a role model,” said Mr. Smith. “I thrive on helpingpeople, and that’s how I know a career in correctional servicesis for me.” Ms. Downey added: “I feel this is a great opportunity for ourcommunities. Dartmouth Harbourwalk Trail Closed for Upgrades

first_imgThe Dartmouth Harbourwalk trail will be temporarily closed for two construction projects. The first project is the reinstatement of the trail in the vicinity of the road to the new sewage treatment plant. The second project is the installation of a storm water pipe from the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) property to the harbour. Signs are posted indicating that the trail will be closed until Dec. 19. If the work is completed early, the trail will be reopen sooner. Minister Takes Buy Local Challenge

Today, Jan. 17, Mr. Parent signed a Buy Local pledge showing his commitment to support Nova Scotia local farmers, food producers and artisans. 4H Members Participate in Annual Kevin Grant Memorial Leadership Tour

first_img4-H youth are travelling to several communities in the province this week to learn what each community can offer their future. Ten members, age 14 to 16, from across the province were selected to participate in the inaugural Kevin Grant Memorial Tour, hosted this year in Cape Breton. “This tour offers 4-H members an opportunity to learn about the many communities in the province,” says Mark Parent, Minister of Agriculture. “This can help young people decide on a career and where they will live after completing their education.” At each stop, 4-H members will learn about the community, meet community leaders, and visit resource-based businesses and rural employers. The tour, from March 16 to 18, will feature several speakers and visits to businesses, museums and post-secondary institutions. “Kevin Grant was a strong supporter of the Nova Scotia 4-H program and we are proud his legacy will live through this conference and tour,” said Arthur Pick, acting manager, 4-H and Rural Organizations. Mr. Grant was a long-time 4-H participant, public servant, and avid supporter of the 4-H program. The conference and tour is sponsored by a memorial fund in his name. The fund provides a significant endowment to the Nova Scotia 4-H Foundation to assist with rural youth development. Nova Scotias First Dementia Strategy Announced

first_imgThe government and Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia are co-leading an advisory committee that will guide the development, consultation and implementation of Nova Scotia’s first comprehensive plan to care for people with dementia and their families. Health and Wellness Minister Leo Glavine announced today, Jan. 27, that the provincial dementia strategy will aim to improve timely access to services, provide support for caregivers and ensure people affected by dementia can remain independent for as long as possible. “Nova Scotia has an aging population. As we grow older, there will be greater pressures on our health-care system to deliver the care people with dementia need and deserve,” said Mr. Glavine. “This work will take time to develop, build and implement correctly. It’s my goal to enhance delivery of dementia care and treatment so Nova Scotians living with dementia, as well as their families and caregivers, are well supported.” The advisory committee members will soon be named and provide direction and advice on the strategy’s content, recommendations and help craft the implementation plan. Nova Scotians with dementia, caregivers and service providers and geriatric health care professionals will make up the advisory committee members. “We’re very pleased the minister and government are moving forward with this commitment,” said Lloyd Brown, executive director of the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia. “We are excited to partner on a strategy that will support caregivers and families and no doubt add quality of life to those affected by dementia.” Nova Scotia has the oldest population per capita in the country; about 17.7 per cent of Nova Scotians are aged 65 or over. Mr. Glavine said these demographics highlight the need to review and refocus the province’s Continuing Care Strategy and create a provincial dementia strategy. “I am enthusiastic about taking part in helping to formulate a dementia strategy,” said Dr. Kenneth Rockwood, professor of geriatric medicine and neurology at Dalhousie University. “The commitment to a system that is more responsive, more efficient and more effective is inspiring.” A panel of experts was invited to discuss Nova Scotia’s aging population, its impacts on the Continuing Care Strategy and solutions around care delivery. The Minister’s Roundtable on Continuing Care brought together leading Nova Scotia researchers, academics, clinicians and advocates who work with seniors and people of all ages with disabilities and conditions for a discussion about how best to care for an aging population and how to move forward on a dementia strategy. January is national Alzheimer Awareness month. “January is a good time to begin work on the strategy as understanding the effects of living with dementia are top of mind for all Nova Scotians,” said Mr. Glavine. About 80 per cent of provincial park campsite bookings are made by campers before arriving at a park. Day-use provincial parks operate from May 15 to Oct. 12. Opening dates for camping parks vary during May and June, with closings in September and October. The reservation fee is $9, with a $7 cancellation fee. Before July 3, alcohol is not permitted in any provincial camping park. This year, seven of 20 provincial camping parks are changing to self registration. Campers can either book ahead, online or by toll-free calling, or arrive at a park and use the phone at the front gate to book and pay for a campsite. first_imgThe government’s new $2 million Creative Industries Fund is ready to help creative Nova Scotia artists and enterprises market their talents and their products outside of Nova Scotia. “The creative sector is a unique and valuable economic contributor,” said Tony Ince, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. “We recognize the role played by these enterprises and want to help them grow and help them export their products and their talents outside our province.” “The investment behind the new Creative Industries Fund will increase our global competitiveness and spotlight Nova Scotian creators on the world stage,” said Scott Long, executive director of Music Nova Scotia. “For the music business in particular this new fund, when combined with the Music Nova Scotia Investment Program, will encourage the creation, development, and growth of Nova Scotian music businesses and artists.” The Creative Industries Fund is available to for-profit businesses, not-for-profit organizations and social enterprises operating in the creative industries, including but not limited to, the music, publishing, craft, visual arts, performing arts, film, and design fields. Government has already begun processing applications and demand is high. For the music industry, the Creative Industries Fund will assist established companies in the music industry, primarily to enhance their export growth. Inspection begins in areas famous for coaching centres

first_imgNew Delhi: In the wake of Surat coaching centre inferno, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) on Monday said that they have started the inspection of coaching centres in the city. Whether the coaching centres are following fire safety norms will be under the scanner of fire services.Chief Fire Officer (DFS) Atul Garg told Millennium Post that in the four areas identified as Kalu Sarai, Karol Bagh, Laxmi Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar they have sent their teams. “A meeting was held among senior fire officials in which we decided to start the inspection. Four teams were formed for the purpose,” said Garg adding that at the first inspection being conducted on those coaching centres which are situated in high rise buildings. A few years back, I saw a couple of Muslim craftsmen making absolutely stunning gold and silver engravings on the temple walls. This incident left me speechless as I was really fascinated to see the powerful Hindu-Muslim bond. It was then that I expressed my desire to make a documentary about these craftsmen. However, they denied coming on the camera because of the fear of getting into controversies and losing their job/homes. The result of that mental wrestle is in front of you in the form of Nakkash. How much time did the making of this film take? It took almost a year for pre-production as I had to think about the designs and the way our sets would look like. Shooting in live temples would have been extremely difficult and hence a lot of effort went in the pre-production. We then shot for about 6-7 weeks. Later, it took over a year to give Nakkash the perfection it needed. Filmmaking is a very tough job and we faced a lot of difficulties during the process. We had to make a balanced film – taking all the facts and figures as well as the feelings of the common people into consideration. With a unique and out-of-the-box concept comes a little risk of box office performance and critical appreciation. What are your expectations from the film? It is not about mainstream cinema or parallel cinema. I believe, there is a risk in everything that you do. But as a filmmaker, when you passionately dream about something, you don’t care about the risk involved. Having said that, I think the mainstream cinema actually has a greater risk because of the big budget. It only depends upon the box office numbers whereas movies like Nakkash always give the satisfaction of fulfilling a social responsibility (by giving a socially relevant message to the people). Even though the box office does matter to all the producers, I feel that if our film gives a new perspective, it will be a true win for the whole team of Nakkash. How is the title relevant to the story? It is the story about a gifted Muslim craftsman (known as Nakkash in Urdu), who uses his talent to engrave the Gods in Hindu temples, and how the people around have contrasting opinions about his work. I felt that Nakkash would be the most relevant name for my film as people will directly relate it to the craftsmen, who put their life and hard work in shaping such beautiful places (temples).last_img read more

PIL for population control in India HC seeks Centre reply

first_imgNew Delhi: The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought response of the Centre on a PIL seeking implementation of measures to control the country’s rising population on the grounds that it was the root cause of rise in crimes, pollution and dearth of resources and jobs. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice Brijesh Sethi issued notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Law Commission of India seeking their stand on the plea which was listed for hearing next on September 3. Also Read – Dussehra with a ‘green’ twist The petition by BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, who is also a lawyer, has sought implementation of the recommendations for population control made by the National Commission to Review the Working of the Constitution (NCRWC) headed by Justice Venkatchaliah. “The NCRWC, after making immense efforts for two years and elaborate discussion, had suggested addition of Article 47A in the Constitution and formulation of Population Control Law. “Till now the Constitution has been amended 125 times, hundreds of new laws have been enacted, but population control law, utterly required for country, is not made, though it will curtail more than 50 per cent problems of India,” the petition has said. The plea has claimed that the population of India has “marched ahead” of China, as about 20 per cent the population does not have Aadhaar and therefore, is not accounted for, and there are also crores of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis living illegally in the country. Upadhyay, in his plea, has also claimed that “population explosion is also the root cause of corruption”, apart from being a contributory factor behind heinous crimes like rapes, domestic violence, etc. He has further argued that without population control, campaigns like Clean India and Save the Girl Child would not succeed. Jaypee Infratech insolvency Creditors decide to vote on NBCC bid from today

first_imgNew Delhi: Creditors of Jaypee Infratech Thursday decided to put on vote NBCC’s bid to acquire the debt-laden realty firm even as the state-owned firm did not dilute certain conditions in its offer including relief from future tax liabilities, sources said. The voting under the insolvency process, run by Jaypee Infratech’s Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) Anuj Jain, will start from Friday and continue till June 10, they added. As many as 13 banks and over 23,000 home buyers have voting rights in the committee of creditors (CoC). Buyers have nearly 60 per cent votes. NBCC did not dilute its conditions related to exemption from future tax liabilities and seeking permission from Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), sources said. However, the public sector firm proposed that it would reduce the value of unsold inventories offered to lenders to Rs 1,300 crore from earlier Rs 1,750 crore, they added. Sources said the banks had reservations to NBCC’s bid, but the CoC still decided to put the offer on vote as per the direction of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). The tribunal had asked lenders to negotiate with NBCC by May 30 so that voting could start from May 31. The IDBI-led lenders’ consortium had written to the NBCC that its bid would be considered “favourably” if the public sector firm meets its five conditions. “The resolution plan should reinstate 1,426 acres of land that was earlier offered to the secured financial creditors under the debt asset swap,” law firm Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has written on behalf of the lenders consortium comprising 13 banks. NBCC should undertake to get the requisite approval from YEIDA if the “deemed approval” from YEIDA as proposed in the bid for transfer of Yamuna Expressway and land to special purpose vehicles (SPVs) are not approved by the adjudicating authority, the letter had said. Lenders also put a condition that NBCC should also undertake to get necessary nod from the Income Tax authorities for implementation of the bid if the relief sought by the public sector firm for any future tax liability is not approved by the adjudicating authority. “Any income tax liability or GST liability or corporate tax liability which arises in future on account of transfer of land parcels, the same shall be borne by the resolution applicant and not by the secured financial creditors,” the letter said. Earlier this month, the CoC rejected a bid by Mumbai-based Suraksha Realty through a voting process. Later, the panel decided to put on vote NBCC’s offer even as bankers were opposed to this move citing certain conditions in the resolution plan submitted by the public sector firm. On the bankers’ plea, the NCLAT had on May 17 annulled voting by homebuyers and lenders on NBCC’s bid and allowed renegotiation on the offer by May 30. The voting process could start from May 31. In its latest offer, NBCC had proposed infusion of Rs 200 crore equity capital, transfer of 950 acres of land worth Rs 5,000 crore as well as Yamuna Expressway to banks and completion of flats by July 2023 in order to settle an outstanding claim of Rs 23,723 crore of financial creditors, including banks and home buyers. The patient was in critical condition when his family members brought him to the private hospital in Kolkata. The 38-day-old boy was taken to a local doctor who told the family members that there was nothing seriously wrong with the patient. However, as his condition deteriorated, the family members decided to shift the baby to Kolkata. After primary investigation, Dr Mandal and his team put the baby under ventilation. Soon, he started the baby with prostaglandin infusion to stabilise his condition. The baby was diagnosed with transposition of great arteries with small patent ductus arteriosus. The doctors performed the arterial switch procedure on the patient, to correct transposition of the great arteries. A thorough screening of comorbidity factors like infection, poor nutrition, deranged liver and kidney function and abnormal neurological condition helped Dr Mandal to take the correct medical decision. This was an extremely critical case for the doctors as the mother had lost her babies in two previous occasions. Dr Mandal, senior consultant, Department of Pediatric Cardiology, who carried out the operation, said: “Such a rare defect happens to 1 in 3,300 newborn infants. Success rate in these cases is less. In the Western world, we have only 3% mortality, while developing world stands at 15%. It was a difficult decision for us to carry out the operation. Patnaik seeks Rs 5228 cr to deal with cyclone Fani damage

first_imgNew Delhi: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday proposed that natural calamities should be a criteria for according Special Category Status to states, while asking for Rs 5,228 crore aid in wake of the huge devastation caused by cyclone Fani to public infrastructure, property and livelihoods of the people in the state. He also sought the allocation for 5 lakh permanent houses to replace the habitations damaged in the cyclone. In his address at the fifth meeting of the Governing Council of NITI Aayog chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here, Patnaik said that the unique geo-climatic condition of Odisha made it vulnerable to multiple and frequent natural disasters. These natural calamities pose a serious challenge to our economic development. Therefore I propose that ‘natural calamity’ should be included as a criteria for according Special Category Status to Odisha.” As an interim measure, he said that all states hit by major calamities may be declared as “Special Focus States” and granted benefits of Special Category Status for a specific period. He apprised the Governing Council that Odisha has come a long way – from a poverty-stricken state to a one which showed the highest reduction of poverty among major states in a decade; from a food-deficient state to a rice-surplus state and one of the largest contributors to the Central pool; and from a helpless state at the time of disasters to a State which has set global standards in disaster management. Terming the NITI Aayog Governing Council as “Team India”, Patnaik made some broad suggestions for women empowerment in all spheres, simultaneous elections as “frequent elections affect the development climate” and that in a large country like India, primary sector especially agriculture should always be taken care of. Suggesting judicious utilization of water resources, he called for the Second Green Revolution to happen in India’s dryland areas. He proposed that environmental and economic development should go hand in hand and he was of the view that a scientific comprehensive survey was needed as most of the beneficiary-oriented schemes were based on such surveys. Citing his government’s Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme for the welfare of 50 lakh small and marginal farmers and 25 lakh landless agricultural households, he welcomed the scheme for providing income support to farmers, but strongly suggested inclusion of landless labourers and sharecroppers under PM-KISAN as rural prosperity and reduction in poverty cannot be achieved without adequate focus on these weaker sections of agricultural economy. The Odisha Chief Minister said that creation of new/optimization of existing irrigation potential with due regard to water use efficiency are key factors to achieve the goal of raising agricultural productivity and doubling income of the farmers.last_img read more
